In BABYLON BERLIN, Inspector Gareon Rath (Volker Bruch), the son of a famous detective, joins Berlin Police’s Vice Squad in 1929. Rath and the suspicious partner of his, Detective Chief Inspector Bruno Wolter (Peter Kurth), immediately bust a smut peddling band which Rath has vague ties to. It rapidly becomes obvious this pornography operation has connections to a bigger criminal syndicate in Germany. Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) lives in a slum with the whole family of her. The mom of her is ill, leaving Charlotte to offer for her young, siblings, and grandparents niece. Throughout the day, she work for the police department, cataloguing photographs from murder scenes. During the night, she lives the life of a flapper, and unexpected prostitute, in Berlin’s flourishing underground nightlife. Meanwhile, a team of Russian spies hijacks a train to Berlin as a part of an operation to overthrow Stalin. Because the team prepares to hold out the plan of theirs, one of them is actually discovered to become a spy for the Soviet secret police.
